How to Bet on Sport

· Updated 22 June 2026

What a bet actually is

A sports bet is an agreement on an uncertain outcome at an agreed price. You stake an amount in rand; if your selection is correct, the bookmaker pays out at the odds you took. If it isn’t, you lose the stake. That’s the whole mechanic — everything else is detail.

The main bet types

  • Single — one selection. It wins or it doesn’t. The best place to start.
  • Multiple / accumulator — several selections combined; all must win. Bigger potential return, much lower chance. Easy to over-reach here.
  • Each-way — common in racing: part of the stake backs a win, part backs a place.
  • Over/under and handicaps — bet on a total (e.g. total goals) or on a margin, rather than the outright winner.

How a stake becomes a payout

With fixed odds, the price is locked in when you place the bet. Potential return on decimal odds is simply stake × odds. A R100 bet at 1.80 returns R180 (a R80 profit plus your R100 back). The number is known before you stake — that’s the point of fixed odds.

Before you place a bet

Bet only with a licensed South African bookmaker, set a budget first, and treat single bets as the default while you learn. Next, learn how odds price probability — it’s the one skill that pays for itself.

Frequently asked

How much should I stake?

Only what you can comfortably afford to lose. Set a budget before you start and treat it as the price of entertainment, not an investment.

When do I get paid?

A fixed-odds bet settles once the result is official. Winnings are calculated as your stake multiplied by the odds, with your stake returned on top for decimal odds.

What's the difference between fixed odds and tote betting?

With fixed odds the price is locked the moment you bet, so you know your exact return whatever happens to the market afterward. Tote, or pari-mutuel, betting — common in horse racing — pools all the stakes together and only sets the payout after the event, based on how the money was split. So a fixed-odds bet gives certainty; a tote bet can pay more or less than you expected when the pool settles.

Does a winning bet get taxed in South Africa?

For a recreational punter, gambling winnings generally aren't treated as taxable income — you keep what you win from a licensed bookmaker. Where it gets murky is if betting becomes a regular, business-like source of income, which can change how the taxman views it. For the casual bettor putting through entertainment money, the return that lands in your wallet is yours.
